Answer: Creosote is the by byproduct of in complete combustion in a wood burning fire. There are many factors that will determine the amount of creoste given off and the amount it will accumlate inside your chimney including the amount of smoke, temperature of the fire and air turbulence to name a few. There is no such thing as a creosote free wood burning fire. Creossote will accumlate no matter what type of wood is burned Creosote in chimneys can be catgorized in three stages Stage 1 is a flaky soot form and is brushed away with minimal effort, Stage 2 is a hard brittle deposit generally a rigourous brushing with a flat wire chimney brush will remove most of it, stage 3 is a thick glazed tar’e substance that can not be removed with brushing alone chemicals and mechanized chimney cleaning methods are the most common and expensive way to remove the stubborn creosote deposits. Creosote can easily ignite with a hot fire around 1000 degrees F and burn at tempatures that can exceed 2000 degrees F. The rapid intense heat can cause your clay flue liner to crack and collapse leaving the interior walls of your house to literally burst into flames.
